This course covers all the basics for weaving beautiful baskets. Discussions include types of materials, where to obtain materials and how to dye raw materials. Participants learn basic flat and twill weaves, as well as decorative accent weaves, round weaves and Japanese weave. Participants also discover how to work with wooden handles, hoops and ribs. Types of baskets covered include wine baskets, berry baskets, melon baskets, Hopi carrying baskets and woven ornaments.

WEEKEND WORKSHOP with Cori Ruszkowski

SP-9011 • Sat.-Sun., May 24-25, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

This two-day workshop covers all the basics of working with flat reed. Day one includes discussion regarding types of materials and resources for obtaining materials, how to dye raw materials, basic flat and twill weaves, starting and finishing baskets and incorporating wooded handles. Participants learn these skills by making wine baskets and/or berry baskets. Day two builds upon the techniques learned in the first day; participants discover how to work with wooden hoops by making ribbed baskets such as melon baskets and/or Hopi carrying baskets.
