Standing in front of a blank canvas, Gini Illick is always mindful of the masters who have come before her. Educated at Moore College of Art, Philadelphia, and Moravian College, Bethlehem, she developed a deep appreciation for the art of the European Canon while studying with Myron Barnstone, who taught the systems and language of a thousand years of art.
Born and raised in Westfield, N.J., Gini moved to Bethlehem and finished her last two years of high school at Moravian Academy.
“I always wanted to be an artist, before I really knew what it meant. It has always been there, a constant drumbeat,” she says. “I found my place in the modernist tradition. It has a rigor and a psychological depth that are important to me.”
Gini’s stars are Picasso, Giacommetti, Villon and Schiele.
Her paintings, which reflect the modernist tradition but also incorporate
elements of abstract expressionism, are rich with color and layers
of impasto.
Over the years, Gini’s work has been exhibited in colleges, museums and galleries
throughout the region, including galleries in New York City, Cedar Crest
College in Center Valley, Lehigh University and Monsoon Gallery in Bethlehem,
the Allentown Art Museum and Connexions Gallery in Easton. Her art is also
found in numerous private collections from the East Coast to California.
Gini practices yoga, loves gardening and enjoys spending time with her husband,
Tom, and family. She has two grown children and two grandchildren.
“A place to work for an artist is essential. This has given all of us, as Virginia Woolf said, a room of one’s own. We all now have a room of our own and it is invaluable.”
