When it comes to art, the world is Heather Sincavage’s easel. A mixed media artist whose work has been inspired by influences as varied as the love of her family, a challenging personal relationship and a major wrist injury that could have ended her art career, she uses her artistic talent as a vehicle for exploring everything from societal values and stereotypes, to folklore and the harsh realities of life.
A graduate of Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, and the University of Washington’s School of Art, where she earned her Master of Fine Arts Degree, Heather has a strong background in painting, jewelry making and metalsmithing, but she is also influenced by fiber arts, photography and an array of other mediums. She has exhibited throughout the region, is a Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts grant recipient and has been awarded a fellowship from the Vermont Studio Center. In addition, she has served as artist-in-residence for the Lehigh Valley Arts Council.
An accomplished instructor with a passion for helping others realize the power of the arts, Heather has taught at Kutztown University, Marywood University and the University of Washington. She is currently an adjunct professor at Lehigh University and an instructor at Baum School of Art. She often works with at-risk youth and developmentally challenged individuals, enjoying immensely those special moments when her students realize that they can do some truly positive things through the arts.
“I enjoy helping people really see their ideas through and see the value in experimenting,” she says. “It is just really cool when they surprise themselves and you had a little hand in that by just kind of nudging them along.”
“The cool thing about being here is the community of people – it’s that little bit of encouragement that you get. It’s great to see how other artists catch your eye and see what other people are doing.”
