Free workshops for people, caregivers and families touched by cancer.

Sponsored by LIVESTRONG and The Creative Center

Geared for adults, these carefully crafted workshops are taught by artists from throughout the region and are designed to bring out the creative spirit in everyone regardless of art experience. They compliment one another and are perfect for those seeking mind, body and energy renewal.

Upon arrival for classes, please check in at the front desk.
All classes will be held in the Banko Gallery or in the visual arts classroom.

July Workshops

Art of rhythm and dance with Tahya
Discover rhythm and movements used in Middle and Far Eastern traditional arts designed to kindle your creative spirit for relaxation & healing. Rejuvenate through these ancient arts to create joy, quiet a restless mind, alleviate frustration, cultivate mindfulness and expand imagination creativity ~ important components to recovering a personal spiritual connection to health. This class will help you slow down, relax, and follow the beat of your heart while you gain a peaceful state of calm and deep sacred healing. Friday, July 18 6:30-9:30pm.

Hand dyed Origami paper with Liz Magno
Using tie-dye techniques, Liz will show you how to dye soft paper in brilliant colors of your choice. The beautiful paper will be folded into hand fans for display or to use on a lazy summer's day. Thursday, July 31 9am-12pm.

August Workshops

Painting Abstract Floral with Alison Bessesdotter
Part 1. Learn how to create pleasing abstract grid style backgrounds and landscapes full of light and joy in quick drying acrylic paints. This is the foundation for the beautiful flowers added in part 2. Monday, August 11 6:30-9:30pm.

Painting Abstract Floral with Alison Bessesdotter
Part 2. This is where the floral fun begins! Imagine your favorite colors painted with easy to learn brush strokes. Alison will show how you can add imaginary or inspired floral images to colorful background from Part 1. Monday, August 18 6:30-9:30pm.

Star/Carousel Book with Maryann Riker
This fun book form is created to house favorite poems, collages or pictures. Folded and attached, this form creates five little dioramas to showcase your favorites! Thursday, August 28 6:30-9:30pm.

John Fitzgerald Toya

No experience is necessary

John Fitzgerald Toya is an artist from the Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico. He has been an artist in residence at the Banana Factory several times as well as a dancer at Musikfest with his dance and drumming group Star Feather. Mr. Toya will be leading a painting workshop and talking about Native American symbolism and spirituality and how art plays an integral role in healing. Absolutely no painting experience is necessary!

Jemez Pueblo symbols include hummingbirds, rainbows, feathers, butterflies,
lightening, corn and more! Participants will be guided to create their own
family stories by assigning their own meanings to these iconic designs.
