Ponder Goembel, Artist, Illustrator and Teacher

Ponder Goembel has thrived on art since childhood. She grew up only a few blocks from the Maryland Institute of Art where her parents met and settled in the multicultural city of Baltimore. Her parents and friends encouraged her artistic bend but for college she chose to venture to a bigger city and attended the Philadelphia College of Art, now U of Arts. She enjoyed learning a variation of arts including history of film, printmaking and animal drawing which still influence her work. With a BFA in Illustration Ponder began a career as a freelance illustrator working for magazine and record companies and advertising and design agencies in Philadelphia and New York City.

After ten years Ponder moved to Bucks County PA with her husband and child and began work as a children’s book illustrator. She enjoyed creating art for children in magazines as well as children’s books for over twenty-five years. She is best known for her work on the Richard Jackson books written by Lisa Wheeler. These books, Sailor Moo, Cow at Sea, Old Cricket and Castaway Cats received numerous starred reviews and awards. Her illustrations have exhibited at the Society of Illustrators in NYC, as well as the Society of children’s Book Writers and Illustrators conferences and other venues.

The children’s book market changed so without illustration work Ponder soon re-discovered oil painting on canvas to feed her creative apatite. Soon after she started teaching in local art programs. Now Ponder enjoys painting landscapes, animals, pets and imaginative images as well as teaching beginners to advanced students how to make art. She has exhibited and sold her oil paintings, children’s book art and children’s books in local galleries, events and bookstores. You may visit Ponder Goembel’s website which will soon include her oils, prints and art classes in addition to her children’s books:
