Using fine arts and narrative, Volunteerism is given a voice in this work through featured local volunteers. Artist, D Nina Cruz, paints their likenesses on 2' x 3' maple panels, using wood stain alone. This purposefully curated show displays these monochromatic works in different hues with encouraging biographies along side. Each Bio offers the reason they serve, and personal perspective of what they have gained. The biographies end with a word of personal encouragement to act and take a leap of faith into loving and serving.

“The Vision of the new BLACK— Volunteerism art exhibition is two-fold. The first and central is to raise volunteerism awareness. If Volunteerism could speak, what would it say? This project educates and inspires. People of all ages and cultures are encouraged to put 'giving of themselves' into practice for the advancement of good in humanity and communities everywhere.

The second auxiliary note is demonstrated by virtue of the means, the Arts. We must consider returning the value to the Humanities and Creative art. This exhibition practices the belief that the Arts can and should be a part of positive experiences that lift the human spirit and add meaning for a purposeful life.

Living in a time where people are searching for purpose and antidotes to sadness and health issues, it is imperative to look at all that is at our disposal for resolution. Giving may seem counter intuitive to the self, but data reveals that living for self preservation renders meager gain. Any gain archived from it is quite temporal... it fades quickly.” – D Nina Cruz
