About the Exhibition:
After a year like the last one, it’s impossible not to notice the impact that estrangement from our people has had on us. As I worked on these, again I found myself cycling through the spectrum of loneliness that’s become increasingly familiar as the year has progressed. These paintings are meant to reflect how the pandemic shifted the ways we look out at the world and in at ourselves. The occasional dream-like state that came from living very similar days for a year is reflected in some of the more imagined, foliage-filled environments - somewhere that feels safe to me, somewhere to process the internal shifts. In the other portraits where the figures are present in their environments they are absorbing and processing the changes of the outside world, often exhibiting a wariness upon confronting the viewer’s gaze. I feel an eerie accountability from their eyes, like they’ve got something figured out and are expecting me to get there too. “Doing the work” is a phrase that has been tossed around heavily in the last year - a phrase intended to mean much more than a BLM sticker on your waterbottle. It’s a conscious digging into your roots, questioning their tangles, and dispelling the rotten parts. As we begin to transition back into the outside world, we must continue to repeatedly ask - how will we tend to ourselves? How will we tend to each other? - Lauren Beauchner
