4 Weeks

Tuesdays, February 1-22 | 6-7:30 p.m.

Explore and create collages with washi, traditional Japanese paper, with Rei Ukon. Participants will learn different collage techniques that go hand-in-hand with washi and incorporate other found materials like newspaper and magazines to create unique art pieces! The slow, meditative movements of tearing and collaging with washi encourage patience and opens the imagination to what you can create with paper. Classes will consist of demonstrations along with discussion topics to inspire collage pieces and encourage dialogue.

My name is Rei Ukon and I am a queer and trans Japanese collage artist with a fascination for the hidden, spiritual world. My works reflect a journey of understanding the relationships that make up our lives and towards inner peace. Specifically, collage has been a healing medium. The act of taking an existing material to create from imagination mirrors the experience of holding queerness and transness together in forging identity. Each tear in a piece of paper represents a process of letting go and embracing imperfections while awaiting the unique surprises each tear can offer.

My personal experience with art making inspires me to share its transformative nature with others. Through workshops and classes, I aim to cultivate safe spaces for creation. Currently, I am a Teaching Artist at the Banana Factory, Lehigh University Art Galleries, and the Art Establishment.
