Two Day Workshop

Saturday, May 4 & Sunday, May 5 | 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Perfect for the future children’s book illustrator, comic, or graphic novelist, this two day workshop focuses on creating characters filled with life, movement, and originality. Day 1 concentrates on using traditional drawing media to develop your character’s unique appearance and personality. Artists will learn how to sketch a posed character in motion from a variety of perspectives in order to generate a three-panel character turnaround. Students will use figure drawing, core facial expressions, distinctive silhouettes, costuming, and color theory to crystallize their ideas into compelling heroes, villains, magicians and tricksters. Day 2 of the workshop focuses on using Adobe Photoshop to digitally color and fine-tune your character design. Key lessons include creating and organizing layers, making selections, and using digital brushes to add color, texture, and lighting effects.

Jessica Bastidas received her B.F.A. in Illustration and Humanistic Studies and M.A.T. from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Bastidas has exhibited work locally at Brick and Mortar gallery in Easton, Bethlehem House Contemporary Gallery, and the Baum School of Art. Bastidas currently teaches visual art at Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore. Bridging the world of fine art and illustration, her art focuses on navigating the complex linguistic and cultural bounds experienced while living, traveling, and teaching abroad in Italy, São Tomé, Cabo Verde, and The Commonwealth of Dominica. Although borders are often used as means of separation and marginalization, Bastidas believes the periphery is concurrently an area of the dynamic exchange that demands that we critically deconstruct our own prejudice and privilege. By utilizing art as research to acknowledge power, politics, and diversity, we recognize our shared humanity. Most recently Bastidas was honored as ArtsQuest Linny Award for Emerging Artist of the Year and designer of the 2019 Musikfest Poster.
