Teen Studio Intensives for Ages 13-18 years

Studio Intensives are designed with teens and pre-teens in mind. These courses offer older campers (ages 10-18) the opportunity to explore mediums in greater depth. Choose from different topics each week including ceramics, painting, cartooning, fiber arts, and hot glass, all taught by our talented Teaching Artists.

Gouache Painting

Gouache is an old painting medium which has gained more popularity recently especially online. Gouache is a simple to learn paint and a fantastic place to start learning to paint. Whether your interest is in using gouache to create your own illustrations or you just love the look from famous animated movies such as studio Ghibli or even classic Disney films you will find this class helpful as a beginner.

Students will spend the week learning each step to make their own wheel thrown vessels. The class will include throwing and trimming pieces on the pottery wheel and adding handles and other embellishments if time allows. Due to the nature of wheel throwing, this class is not recommended for students under 10. Campers will glaze their bisque-fired work on Monday, July 1, from 3:45-5:45pm. Instructors will glaze work for any campers who are unable to attend this session.

Young artists of all skill levels are welcome to join this fun, exciting and hot summer camp. Participants who are grouped together by experience level will transform molten glass into objects such as solid paperweights and blown items like drinking glasses. Every student receives one-on-one attention while handling molten glass. Participants are encouraged to work together in a positive environment where teamwork and creativity are emphasized. Open to ages 13 and up.

In this fun and engaging class, students will take their illustration skills to the next level using an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. They’ll explore challenging projects and their own personal style as they jump from creating art on paper to the screen. With the versatile and intuitive drawing app called Procreate, the possibilities are endless — students will utilize brushes that mimic artist tools, layered documents, custom color palettes, and countless features to enhance their digital designs! iPads are provided.

Learn how to make artwork that lights up with LED circuits! This class will focus on paper circuits, sewable circuits, and wearable circuits. You’ll learn electronics basics and different ways to incorporate LED lights into your projects. Campers must attend the first day of class in order to successfully participate in this camp.

Using hand-drawn simple illustrations created with the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, this engaging class will introduce students to applying animation techniques to make their drawings come alive! Starting from the beginning, we’ll complete short, fun animation challenges — it’s a time for play, for experimentation, and learning how drawn frames can interact within the programs. Though animation can be very complex, we’ll break down challenging concepts and show how to specifically animate portions of artwork to get a dynamic and amazing result! iPads are provided.

Drawing and Painting from your Imagination: An Introduction to Illustration

Aspiring artists always want to know how to make their own, ideas, characters, concept come to life on paper. This class is lead by David Matzura, studio resident and illustrator. He will be teaching students his actual methods for creating an image from scratch all the way to a final stage of painting. Whether you want to create an OC, paint a landscape, pet portraits or any other original artwork this class will have useful skills to take into the high school and college level. Over the course of one week this class will be walking through the step by step process of image creation. Starting with thumbnails then refining the drawings and eventually creating a line and wash watercolor image at the end of the week.

Discover screen-printing! This unique print-making process can be used to create all kinds of artwork—prints and posters, but also t-shirts and other wearable items! In this week-long intensive, teens will create their own screen-printed artwork, and add their art to a collaborative zine (a DIY magazine) to share with their classmates.

Amigurumi crochet is the Japanese art of crocheting stuffed animals and figures from yarn. You’ll learn the basics of crochet, and special techniques used in amigurumi to sculpt your three-dimensional creations. Wearable Art: Transform a Thrift Store Treasure into a Runway Ready Fashion

In this workshop, we will use artmaking to get to know ourselves and each other. Together we will build community and connection by creating autobiographical collage pieces, and a collaborative "quilt" that will use cut and applique techniques. Each participant will make one part of the full "quilt" to take home.

Enjoy the lazy days of summer while looking super stylish after creating beautiful summer-inspired jewelry. Adjustable rings perfect for fingers and toes, sunburst stone and wire pendants and stackable bracelets can all be made in this relaxed workshop. Discover the process of mural-making with professional mural artist, Matt Halm. Teens will learn the steps of designing murals—starting at the beginning with planning a design, and culminating in an opportunity for students and their guardians to paint an actual mural with Matt at the Lehigh Valley International Airport. The final day of this intensive (August 16) takes place at the Lehigh Valley International Airport. Transportation to the airport will not be provided. Please consider this when registering for camp.

Needle Felting
