2022 InVision Juried Exhibition
October 21 – January 8, 2023
2022 InVision Juried Exhibition
Venue: Crayola Gallery
ArtsQuest is hosting its 13th annual InVision program in the Fall of 2022. InVision is a premier photo-based art program that is designed to foster excitement and dialogue between a diverse group of participants interested in the process of creating art. This series and complimentary year-long programming provide professional development, networking, and hands-on workshops for photographers, image-based artists, creative entrepreneurs, makers, and DIYers. InVision leverages the unique attractions, history, and landscape of the Lehigh Valley and celebrates its diverse artistic and cultural community.
This year, InVision will be hosting its thirteenth-annual open juried exhibition. This exhibition is a regional photo-based juried competition that will feature works of traditional photographers alongside mixed media works that use the photographic process in a significant way.
The theme for this year's juried exhibition asked artists to focus on the diaristic style of image-making:
Photography has always been about capturing a moment in time, from its earliest days it was prized for its permanence and mechanical rendering of the world. This archival impulse is as strong now as ever, with photographers turning to all manner of devices, apps, and microblogging platforms to construct visual diaries. Our reach as artists has never been larger, we are able to share truths and fictions of our lives with scores of people instantly. But more than that, diaristic photography allows us to step outside of ourselves in an image-saturated world, and to paraphrase Nan Goldin, “enable [us] to remember ''.
From staged and constructed images, multimedia approaches, straight documentary images, and new digital apps and aesthetics, the ways that we are recording our lives are more varied than ever. In the age of photoshop, with our faith in objective truth flagging, how do our photographs engage with the impermanence of the medium, and the constantly evolving uses of photography in our daily life? We are seeking submissions for the 13th Annual Invision Photo-based Art Juried Exhibition that engage with the diaristic mode of image making, in either style or practice.
-Isla Phillips Gordon
The 13th Annual InVision Juried Exhibition is guest curated & juried by artist Isla Phillips Gordon
Isla P Gordon obsesses over photography. Drawing on her experience as a transgender woman, Isla’s work explores themes of queer adolescence, trans- representation, memory, and the everyday. Fueled by Instagram speed-scrolling, she bounces between photographic vernaculars, deliberately disorienting, flattening space, and questioning the rectangular frame.
Isla received an MFA in Photography and Related Media from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2017. Beginning in 2019, Isla expanded her practice into an on-going performance collaboration with Ashley Kaye entitled Milk and Honey, a flesh-centric endeavor that lampoons pop culture.
Isla’s work has been exhibited internationally, in the USA, Europe and Asia. Isla has performed at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and has been featured in Idle Class Magazine, Candela Gallery (VA) and Paradice Palase (NY). Isla is a 2019 recipient of an Artist 360 Grant.
