Deborah Slahta explores the vessel as a three-dimensional canvas, producing finely crafted Raku and stoneware ceramics. She is a native of Hellertown, Pennsylvania and lifelong resident of the Lehigh Valley. She discovered her passion for working with clay at Moravian College, graduating with. B. S. in Mathematics in 1977. Deborah began teaching at the Banana Factory in the spring of 1999 and was accepted as a juried Resident Artist in May 2000. She has taught ceramic classes for adults, summer camps for children and after school programs for at-risk youth. “With all the technology that surrounds us, I make things with my hands.” Inspired by the centuries old tradition of vessel making, she embraces the intimacy of creating with clay and transforming via touch.
