Laura Bigger-Celestial Bodies Exhibition Statement

This exhibition includes pieces from a few different bodies of work that are visually connected through their integration of celestial bodies such as clouds and space. Some picture a scene of domestic monotony with a surreal meteorological intervention. The domesticated plants and animals symbolize humans’ exertion of control over our environment. Other pieces utilize the metaphor of light being pulled into the gravitational force of a black hole when it crosses the event horizon. The light loosely represents an optimism or agency while the black hole stands for a magnetic hopelessness. More hopeful pieces show light rays moving radiantly away from a black hole. Concern and awe for our planet can be read between the lines in all of the work.

Laura Bigger is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Truman State University in Kirksville, MO. She previously taught at the University of Nevada, Reno and Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN. Originally from Boulder, CO, Bigger received her BA in Studio Art and Hispanic Studies from Colorado College (2008) and her MFA in printmaking from the University of Minnesota (2013). Her work has been exhibited nationally, with recent solo exhibitions at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA in spring 2019 and Culver-Stockton College’s Mabee gallery in Canton, MO this fall.
