10 Weeks

Thursdays, April 4-June 6 | 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Designed for students who have wheelthrowing experience and have command of basic throwing skills. Students will learn to improve and refine their techniques through demonstrations and plenty of individual instruction. Students will leave the class with the knowledge of advanced throwing techniques and continue to improve the way their work is crafted, paying attention to details, and finding their own individual style beyond the basic skills. Students will be exposed to and gain an appreciation for the time and energy needed to produce finely crafted ware.

A lifelong resident of the Lehigh Valley, Deborah Slahta graduated from Moravian College, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics in 1977. She came to work with clay when electing to enroll in a studio ceramics class to fulfill one of the liberal arts requirements. For more than 35 years she has produced finely crafted raku and stoneware pottery. She started teaching at the Banana Factory, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 1999, and was accepted as a resident juried artist in May 2000. In addition to maintaining a studio at the Banana Factory, she teaches ceramic classes for adults, summer camps for children, and participates in the B-Smart after school enrichment program for at-risk youth. “The process of forming a pot on the wheel is magical. I enjoy working with my hands. I love the feel and smell of clay. There is an intimacy working with clay, an intense and physical involvement, establishing a dialogue through touch.” – Deborah Slahta
