Pre-Teen Studio Intensives for Ages 10-12

Studio Intensives are designed with teens and pre-teens in mind. These courses offer older campers (ages 10-18) the opportunity to explore mediums in greater depth. Choose from different topics each week including ceramics, painting, cartooning, fiber arts, and hot glass, all taught by our talented Teaching Artists.

In this fun and engaging class, students will take their illustration skills to the next level using an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. They’ll explore challenging projects and their own personal style as they jump from creating art on paper to the screen. With the versatile and intuitive drawing app called Procreate, the possibilities are endless — students will utilize brushes that mimic artist tools, layered documents, custom color palettes, and countless features to enhance their digital designs! iPads are provided.

Students will spend the week learning each step to make their own wheel thrown vessels. The class will include throwing and trimming pieces on the pottery wheel and adding handles and other embellishments if time allows. Due to the nature of wheel throwing, this class is not recommended for students under 10. Campers will glaze their bisque-fired work on Tuesday, July 2, from 3:45-5:45pm. Instructors will glaze work for any campers who are unable to attend this session.

Hand building is a fun way to learn the basics of working with clay and make some amazing functional clay creations! Students will learn coil, slab, pinch and other hand building techniques and work with sculptural and functional hand building projects. Campers will glaze their bisque-fired work on Monday, July 8, from 3:45-5:45pm. Instructors will glaze work for any campers who cannot attend this session.

Gouache is an old painting medium which has gained more popularity recently especially online. Gouache is a simple to learn paint and a fantastic place to start learning to paint. Whether your interest is in using gouache to create your own illustrations or you just love the look from famous animated movies such as studio Ghibli or even classic Disney films you will find this class helpful as a beginner.

Using hand-drawn simple illustrations created with the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, this engaging class will introduce students to applying animation techniques to make their drawings come alive! Starting from the beginning, we’ll complete short, fun animation challenges — it’s a time for play, for experimentation, and learning how drawn frames can interact within the programs. Though animation can be very complex, we’ll break down challenging concepts and show how to specifically animate portions of artwork to get a dynamic and amazing result! iPads are provided.

LED Plushie Monsters

Make a stuffed plushie that lights up! You’ll learn the basics of sewing to make your own little monster, then build an LED circuit to light up your creation. Campers must attend the first day of class in order to successfully participate in this camp.

Create magickal scenes of fairies, mermaids and elves and even the homes of these creatures with Miss Jackie this summer! In this class you will learn various types of painting techniques like watercolor and acrylic , along with the foundations of painting, to create scenes of whimsy and wonder!

Linoleum Block Printing

Each student will create a design to carve into a linoleum block to print. Students will be challenged to think of negative space and mix colored ink to create their desired pieces. Each student will leave camp with several prints of their finished design.

In this 3-day intensive, campers will use basic hand-building techniques to design and build a bird house out of clay. These bird houses can be funky or functional—students will have the creative freedom to put their own spin on what a bird house is. Students will learn the basics of crochet and create either a hat or a nesting bowl. Students will learn the different terminology used in crochet to help them with their creations. The instructor will give a demonstration on how to create a starting chain, switch colors, etc. At the end of the session, they will walk a way with a unique hat or nesting bowl.

Sculpey Creations

In this class, students will have a great time sculpting their favorite characters and turning them into jewelry if they want. They will use the popular polymer baking clay and paint their small sculptures with acrylic paint. Colored Sculpey will also be used!
